Vaibhav Duggal Obituary, El Paso, TX Suicide Death – Family Says Death Was Preventable

The community is mourning the death of 26-year-old medical student Vaibhav Duggal, who took his own life hours after receiving emails about a patient complaint and potential disciplinary action at Texas Tech Health El Paso. Duggal, a third-year student, had recently been removed from his clinical rotations following allegations that he acted unprofessionally during an OBGYN rotation. According to reports, a patient claimed he asked unusual questions and attempted to follow her on social media.

Following the complaint, Duggal was instructed to appear before a student review committee. Late that night, while lying beside his girlfriend, he received another email urging him to convince the committee he was remorseful and that “it will never happen again.” By the next afternoon, Duggal had died.

His family describes the loss as preventable and has filed a lawsuit against the Texas Tech system, alleging the institution fostered a culture in which students are presumed guilty until proven innocent and failed to provide support during his mental health crisis. Duggal’s father noted that his son had previously volunteered on a suicide hotline, helping others through moments of extreme distress, yet when he needed help himself, none was offered.

Vaibhav Duggal is remembered by friends and family as a dedicated, intelligent, and compassionate individual whose life was tragically cut short. His passing has sparked reflection on the importance of mental health support for students in high-pressure programs, as well as the need for institutions to provide care and understanding during crises.

Those struggling with thoughts of self-harm or feeling overwhelmed are urged to seek help immediately. The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988. Support is available, and no one has to face such moments alone.
